Normally, when we think of sheds, we associate them with garden tools, backyard toys or seasonal things, such as Thanksgiving or Christmas decorations but, using our imagination, we can see that these spaces can go way beyond garden storage. Close your eyes for a moment and visualize a garden shed as an actual room where you can put things like a carpet in, a furniture layout, shelves, mirrors, artwork or even a TV screen!
GUEST ROOM SHED: Whether you’re a social butterfly, have an extended family or just like to be prepared, an extra bedroom for guests can be a very good idea! Add insulation, electricity and flooring or a carpet; furnish it with a bed, reading tables and lamps. You can also add a vanity or maybe a chest of drawers or a small armoire and with a few little details like some books and a couple of houseplants you can have a lovely, inviting place to put up your friends or family for the night.
LIBRARY: If you or anyone in your family is a bookworm, a special place for reading is like having a little paradise in your backyard! Put some nice bookshelves up, add a comfortable sofa or overstuffed armchair, soft lighting and get ready to enjoy quiet moments relaxing with a good book. A mini coffee-maker and a cookie jar could make the place even more welcoming!
ZEN SPACE: A place designed specially for meditation and/or yoga, with indirect lighting, a speaker system to play soft music or calming sound effects; a carpet, pillows and maybe even a stick of incense on a safe, ceramic dish.
GYM: Turn a shed into a gym or a cool fitness studio by adding soft, cushioned flooring, workout equipment such as a treadmill, a weight-lifting system and maybe a stationary bicycle, a sound system and maybe a wall mirror and you will have a great place to exercise in without having to leave your premises!
MUSIC STUDIO: Insulate and soundproof the walls and install electricity with enough outlets. Carpeting, a few shelves, hooks for hanging instruments and microphones, or cupboards to store them in and audio equipment. Any musician would be thrilled to have their own personal space where they can practice and even record music at the strangest hours without disturbing the rest of the family!
GAME ROOM SHED: Having a bunch of teenagers or family friends party inside the house could be annoying at times to other people who live there, so why not set up a gameroom for that purpose but that is a bit detached from the house, like an adapted garden shed where you can install electricity, a pool table, a folding ping-pong table, a game console and a big screen and a mini-bar to hold water bottles or soft drinks. A great place to have fun with friends without having to leave the house!
HOME OFFICE: Even before the pandemic, many people had adapted a small room or a corner of their house to set up a computer and work from home. In some cases, those tiny areas work pretty well but in others, the space that a garden shed provides can be a godsend for people who need a worktable, printer, scanner, lighting, microphone stand and file cabinets.
ART AND HOBBY WORKSHOP: For the artist in the family, it is always great to have a special place to keep materials, like oils, watercolors, paint brushes, canvases, easels or drafting tables and craft materials like fabrics, spools of thread, samplers and a Cricut, a printer or a sewing machine. An adapted garden shed could become a dream artist's studio or artisans’ workshop!
As you can see, garden sheds are not just for storage anymore! Using your imagination and unleashing your creativity, they can be transformed into versatile spaces that cater to you and your family’s specific needs. With a little inspiration and effort, you can create a personalized space that will enhance your lifestyle and even add value to your home!
